One of our Tom’s Trust Young Ambassador’s, Harry, received a British Citizen Youth Award last week for his fundraising and awareness raising of childhood brain tumours, all done in his sister Emily’s memory.

Emily tragically died of a brain tumour at the age of just eight in August 2022, within two weeks of her diagnosis after an MRI revealed she had a brain tumour. Harry and his family have been supported by a Tom’s Trust clinical psychologist since Emily’s diagnosis.

Harry was nominated by The Brain Tumour Charity but also recognised for his family’s Coast-to-Coast walk and Cumbria Way walk that have both raised funds for Tom’s Trust.

Harry’s parents, Andy & Sarah, said: “It was a very emotional day and one to be proud of, recognising what Harry is achieving for his sister.”

Harry added: “I feel very proud and privileged to have received this medal in memory of my sister, Emily. I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported me with my various challenges, donated and helped me raise awareness about the need for more research. I hope that the money I am raising will go towards finding a cure for brain tumours like Emily’s (a diffuse midline glioma) and help other grieving families that are going through a similar devastating time.”

Debs Mitchell, Co-Founder of Tom’s Trust, said: “We are so proud of Harry and delighted that he has been recognised with this fantastic award. An incredibly deserving recipient. We are so thankful to Sarah, Andy and Harry and their family for supporting us in Emily’s memory and bravely sharing the story of her wonderful but painfully short life. We have been so honoured to be able to help them during the most difficult time for their family.”

About the awards

The British Citizen Youth Award, now in its ninth year, honoured young people from across the UK that have made a difference in their communities and to society. These selfless young people have shown commitment to a multitude of causes, raising funds and awareness, and are all dedicated to making a difference. Each inspirational young person received The British Citizen Youth Award Medal of Honour, presented at The Palace of Westminster where the official presentation ceremony was held.

Hosting the event was singer and actress, Kimberly Wyatt who is also a Patron of The British Citizen Youth Award who said: “Many of these kids have faced turmoil in their own lives yet still choose to be selfless and help others. I applaud you and your families for your hard work and dedication. You are the future, and your brilliant endeavours will make a difference!”
