Monday 2 December marks the start of Grief Awarene

Monday 2 December marks the start of Grief Awareness Week. Tom’s Trust itself was born out of the death of a child, beautiful Tom. It is so important to us that we support others who find themselves in this position.

Debs Mitchell, Tom’s mum and Co-Founder of Tom’s Trust says: “After Tom died, I saw a really simple diagram that helped me to understand that my grief will stay the same size, that I wouldn’t ‘get over’ it, that it would remain the same. That felt like a huge relief to me - it didn’t take away the pain, but it took away the pressure to ‘get better’.

“As a parent, I felt it was my responsibility to ensure that other families who walk our path don’t do it unsupported and alone like we did. It is not okay to allow this to happen. That is why I am completely passionate about providing psychological support for families like ours.”

Meet Polly, our newest Young Ambassador! 🌟

Polly is 11 years old and has a passion for dancing, a love for Monsters, Inc., and a special fondness for ponies. Her journey began at just 14 months old, when she was diagnosed with a life-changing benign Optical Pathway Glioma at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

We are so grateful to Polly for sharing her story to inspire and support others, and we are thrilled to welcome her to our incredible Young Ambassadors team! Thank you, Polly! 💙

Children diagnosed with brain tumours face numerou

Children diagnosed with brain tumours face numerous challenges, one of the most significant being the difficulty in forming and maintaining the friendships they would naturally have had in their community and schools. Tom’s Trust clinical psychologists support our families with their return to school following treatment.

Dr Meghan Owens, Tom’s Trust clinical psychologist at Alder Hey says:

“A big part of our work is to support children back into school. After a neuropsychological assessment we will make suggestions to a child’s school on how they can adapt their curriculum and school environment to meet the needs of that child. A lot of schools have never had a child who has gone through a brain tumour diagnosis. We help to make the transition as smooth as possible. Children can lose confidence and look visibly different. It isn’t enough to just support the child, we need to be involved with the family and the school – facilitating the whole system around that child to support the child.”

We are delighted to announce that we have funded t

We are delighted to announce that we have funded the first ever UK-wide project that will explore the differences in access to psychological care within childhood brain tumour services across UK primary care trusts.

The pilot year-long project seeks to understand the implications this inequality has on access to clinical trials. The project has been launched by a team at the Great North Children’s Hospital at @newcastlehosps and is led by Dr Sarah Verity.

Rebecca Wood, CEO of Tom’s Trust, said: “We are excited to fund this project. We know there are huge differences in the care that children with brain tumours receive across the UK and Tom’s Trust strongly believes that every child with a brain tumour should have access to the mental health support that they need, as well as their loved ones."
